Rose Frances Somers died peacefully at her home on West Main Street in Weatherly, Friday evening July 15, 2011.
Born in Hazleton, she was the daughter of the late James and Rose (Collins) Hanley.
A graduate of Hazleton High School, Hazleton General Diploma Nursing School, and, later earning a B.S. in Nursing from Wilkes University: she devoted her life to caring for people. She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish (formerly St. Nicholas Parish) in Weatherly.
She began her career as a private duty nurse in the Hazleton area, then joined the staff at Hazleton General. Later, she worked in private duty in the Weatherly area, where she met her future husband. She worked as a head nurse at the former Carbon County Home in Weatherly Rd #2. Rose, became Director of Nursing at the Lutheran Home on Broad St. Hazleton. Then she became Administrator of St. Luke Manor, and later St. Luke Pavilion in Hazleton before her retirement.
Rose was a long time member of the choir at St. Nicholas in Weatherly and the Weatherly Ecumenical Community Choir. She was a member of the Cranberry Quilter’s Club and the Weatherly Senior Citizen’s Friendship Club. She also enjoyed bowling with the Coffee League in Hometown.
Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, were her daughter, Jeanne M. Kreiger, grandson, Joel James Kreiger; and sisters, Miriam Papincak, Beatrice Kesselring, and Margaret Kaufman.
Surviving are her husband of 58 years, James R. Somers, Weatherly; and children, James R. Somers, Jr. and his wife, Marie, and their sons, James and Nicholas; Susan R. Martin; and Stephen G. Somers and Tod Harach. Also surviving, the family of Jeanne Kreiger Which includes William D. Kreiger II, and their children William Ill, Shaw, Alek, and Casey. There is one great-granddaughter, Caiden Jeanne Kreiger.
Also surviving are Rose’s twin sister, Jeanne Stolz and her husband, James Stolz of Mt. Bethel, several nieces and nephews, and many good friends and neighbors.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of Lourdes R.C.C. 318 Plane Street Weatherly, Pa. at 11 o’clock A.M Thursday, July 21, 2011, Rev. Floyd Caesar to officiate.
Interment will be at Union Cemetery, Weatherly.
