Philomena Kuchar

January 13, 1919 — June 8, 2016

Philomena (Romano) Kuchar, beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend, of Weatherly, Pennsylvania, died peacefully on Wednesday, June 8, 2016, at Heritage Hill Senior Community in Weatherly. She was 97 years old.

Mena is the widow of James Kuchar who passed away on March 16, 1992. She is survived by her daughters, Mary Bickart, wife of Charles, of Delaware Water Gap; Louise Miller, wife of Glenn, of Weatherly; sons, James Kuchar and his wife Rachel of Freeland; and Frank Kuchar and his wife Marina of Weatherly; 9 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

A 1940 graduate of Pennsylvania State University, Mena was an instructor at Middletown Air Technical Service Command during World War II and later worked as a USO director in Texas, New Mexico and Louisiana. She was a teacher of Spanish and English at Weatherly Area High School from 1968 until her retirement in 1983. She served as yearbook advisor at WAHS and in 1978 Mrs. Kuchar was named Outstanding Teacher of the Year by the student body. One of her students, GS, famously remarked, “You're not just a great teacher, Mrs. Kuchar, you're a great human being.”

Philomena loved mahjong and golf and had been a member of the Golden Girls Golf League. As she was an excellent cook, her family and friends enjoyed many meals at her table.

Born January 13, 1919, in New Columbus, Pennsylvania, she was the first baby born in the town founded by her late father Frank Romano and her mother Filomena (Grieco) Romano. She was predeceased by her sister Donata “Lilly” Romano and her brothers Louis, John, and Anthony Romano. Mena is survived by her sisters, Mary Romano and Amelia Kuchar, both of Weatherly, and many nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of Lourdes R.C.C., 318 Plane Street, in Weatherly on Friday, June 17, 2016, at 12 o'clock noon, officiated by Rev. Floyd Caesar. Internment at St. Nicholas R.C.C. Cemetery will follow the mass.

In accord with Philomena's wishes, there will be no viewing or calling hours.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Philip J. Jeffries Funeral Home & Cremation Services of 211 First Street, Weatherly, Pennsylvania.
