Mr. Paul Merkel, age 77, of Tamaqua, died Monday, August 22, 2011, at his home.
He was a U.S. Airforce Veteran of the Korean War.
Paul had been employed by J. I. Case Equipment of Springfield, OH.
He was a graduate of Tamaqua Area High School and Ohio State University where he earned his Masters in Ancient History.
He summered in Israel, working as an archeologist on the Ashkelon Dig and spending 10 years on the Leon Levy Expedition.
Born in Coaldale, he was the son of the late Walter C. Merkel, Sr. and the late Bernice (Ridenbaugh) Merkel.
He is survived by his
One Brother,
Victor A. Merkel and his wife Francine of Tolleson, AZ.
Preceded in death by his companion of 22 years, Virginia McNally; brothers, Walter C. Merkel, Jr. and Miles Merkel.
Private Services are being handled by E. Franklin Griffiths Funeral Home, Inc., 655 East Broad Street Tamaqua, Pa.
Interment at Sky View Memorial Park, Tamaqua.
