Nicholas J. “Nick” Young 87 years of age and his wife, Anna Mae (Elvin) Young, 86 years of age, died Sunday, September 30, 2012 in their home on Welsh Road in Hometown. Nick and Anna Mae were married for sixty-four years.
Nick was born in Pottsville, the son of the late Nicholas J. and Ethel (Brode) Young.
He was a 1942 graduate of Tamaqua High School and attended Kutztown College. He was drafted into the United States Army and served in WW II. As a member of the 330 Field Artillery Battalion, he served during the Battle of the Bulge where he was captured and held as a Prisoner of War by the German Army.
Upon his release Nick returned home to finish his degree in education at East Stroudsburg Teacher's College graduating in 1949 and began a career in education. He was a Guidance Counselor and basketball coach for Tamaqua Area School District. His career with the district spanned 41 years. He earned his masters degree from Pennsylvania State University in 1964.
A well-known radio and sports personality, Nick called both high school football and basketball games for many years, on WMGH, and WLSH radio. His knowledge of the games was secondary to his keen wit and humorous personality.
As a community leader, Nick served on the Boards of the Tamaqua Rotary Club and Tamaqua Chamber of Commerce. He also volunteered at St. Luke’s Miners Memorial Medical Center and was a member of the Tamaqua American Legion.
Nick was proclaimed Tamaqua Citizen of the Year in 1996
Anna Mae, his loving wife, was born in Johnstown, Pa., the daughter of the late Charles, and Ann (Sell) Elvin. A proud mother, grandmother and great grandmother she was also an active participant in her community.
A graduate of Tamaqua High School of 1943, Anna Mae worked at her family's hat business. After she raised their three children, she worked for the former Miners National Bank, now Sovereign Bank.
Both Nick and Anna Mae were very active members of the First United Methodist Church of Tamaqua. Anna Mae was a member of the quilting group of the church, and served as a Girl Scout Leader.
Both supported and volunteered for Tamaqua Meals on Wheels as drivers and board members for 35 years and were active volunteers of the American Red Cross Blood Mobile.
They are survived by their daughters,

Kathi C. of Newton Square, Pa.;
son,
Kevin C. and his wife, Marilyn Young of Derry, NH;
Seven grandchildren, Adam; Kelly Davisson and her husband, Nick; Nathan; Matthew and his wife, Julie; Nelson; Deven; and Lucas;
Four great grandchildren, Harper, Finley, Peyton, and Emelia.
Anna Mae was preceded in death by a brother, Harlan Elvin in 1988.

A Private Committal with Military Honors will be held Friday morning at Sky-View Memorial Park in Hometown.
