Mearl Hartung

April 25, 1932 — October 30, 2016

Mearl E. Kistler Hartung, 84, Tamaqua, PA, left this Earth on Sunday afternoon after 84 beautiful years. She was surrounded by many who loved her dearly. She lived a wonderful life, born and raised in Tamaqua. She was the oldest of three children born to Myrtle (Yost) and Gordon Kistler (both deceased). She was blessed with two brothers, Gordon and his wife, Jane (deceased), Mohrsville, PA and Ernest (deceased) and his wife, Frances, Arkansas.

She was married to Paul R. Hartung who passed away January, 1990. October 30, 1948 was the day they said their wedding vows and October 30, 2016 she joined him for a celebratory dance in heaven for their 68th wedding anniversary. Together they raised twelve children and she ruled the house with a wooden spoon.
She was preceded in death by three sons, Robert P., Rick L. and Raymond D. Surviving daughters are Renee, wife of Ronald Frederick, Blue Ball, PA; April, wife of Kerry Hartranft, New Ringgold, PA; and Linda, wife of Michael Kane; Lizbeth, widow of Anthony F. Domday; and Paula (with whom she resided), wife of Thomas Weinert, all of Tamaqua. Surviving sons are Charles “Butch” Hartung and wife Cindy and Ernest Hartung and wife Christine, both from Tamaqua; Daniel Hartung, Andreas; and Keith Hartung and wife Vidhya, Chambersburg, PA. She leaves behind a legacy with 29 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. Three maternal nephews, Christopher, Thad, and Hans and one niece, Leah and many other nieces and nephews.

A “mom” to many others and well respected. When you met her, you loved her. Seldom did she go anywhere where someone did not stop her and talk about past memories and things she did to brighten their days.

Throughout her life she worked in multiple jobs include Heisler’s Dairy Bar, several factories in the area, Mahoning Valley Nursing Facility, and basically did whatever it took to help support her family. She was an extremely strong woman who would take on the world if it meant protecting her family.

Mearl, was a volunteer for the Tamaqua Crime Watch Program for several years. She enjoyed life, spending time with her family, along with cooking and baking.

She left this earth full of love and cherished memories.
