Maurice C. “Benny” Heater, 82 years of age of East Main Street, Weatherly, passed away on Thursday December 22, 2016 at the Lehigh Valley Hospital Hazleton Campus.
Born in Hazleton on January 30, 1935, the son of the late Maurice C. Heater, Sr., and Catherine (Poltrock) Heater.
Widower of Carol Ann (Erdman) Heater who passed away on March 6, 2013, he is survived by; daughter Jan C. Ray, wife of William J. Ray Jr. of Centreville, Va.; son James D. Heater of Manhattan, NY.; sister, Mrs. Marcia Varklet and her husband Jack of New Mexico; and grandchildren, Kathryn, and Andrew Ray.
A Weatherly High School graduate, Benny served honorably in the United States Army 2nd Armor Division. He worked for the Weatherly Foundry and Effort Foundry as a sales engineer, until forming Benny Heater Company, Inc. He was recently awarded an honorary life membership in the Lehigh Valley Foundrymen’s Association.
Benny and his wife Carol, also ran the Heater Monument Company of Weatherly for over forty years.
Lutheran by faith, Benny was a member of many civic organizations. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias Hyde Park - Fairview Lodge #306, and served as a Past Chancellor Commander.
Brother Benny was most active in the Masonic Fraternity, and it’s appendant bodies, and was a 50 year plus member of Hazle Azalea Fellowship Lodge # 327 F.&A.M.
Known in many masonic circles across the state as “Abu Benny” of the Irem Shrine Temple clown unit of Wilkes-Barre, and Greater Hazleton Shrine club, he also held membership in the Mt. Vernon Commandery, Knights Templar #73.
As a Scottish Rite Mason of the Valley of Allentown he received the 33rd degree, the Scottish Rite’s highest honor in 2005.
He was a past president and chairman of the board of governors for the Allentown Children’s Dyslexia Center, and was active in the endowment committee, and the Builders Council, for the Dyslexia Center.
In 2016 he was awarded the Sovereign Grand Commander’s Distinguished Service Award, for service above and beyond the call of duty.

A Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday December 28, 2016 at 11 o’clock A.M. from Salem U.C.C. of 330 First Street Weatherly, Pennsylvania 18255, Rev. Walter Breiner to officiate.
Friends shall be received on Tuesday evening at the funeral home from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., and on the morning of services in church from 10:00 A.M. until time of services.
Masonic Services Tuesday evening December 27, 2016 at 7:30 P.M. from the funeral home.
