Mary A. Romano, beloved daughter, sister, aunt, great-aunt and friend, of Weatherly, died peacefully on Thursday, April 27, 2017, at Weatherwood Nursing Home in Weatherly where she had been a resident for the past five years. She was 99 years old.
Born September 11, 1917, in Little Italy in Mauch Chunk Township, Mary is the daughter of the late Frank and Filomena (Grieco) Romano. She was predeceased by her sisters, Donata ¨Lillie¨ Romano and Philomena Kuchar, and her brothers, Louis, John and Anthony Romano. Mary is survived by her sister Amelia Kuchar, of Weatherly, as well as many nieces and nephews who Mary mentored and loved as her own.
A graduate of Weatherly High School and the McCann School of Business, Mary worked at Middletown Air Technical Service Command during World War II. In 1944, she became the first employee at Tung Sol in Weatherly, where she helped open the new plant as assistant to the personnel manager. Later she worked at Dorr-Oliver in Hazleton Heights, serving as assistant to the personnel manager there until her retirement in 1982. Following her retirement she worked as a volunteer at her church, St. Nicholas, in Weatherly, and with the American Red Cross Bloodmobile.
Mary loved reading, needlework, knitting and puttering in her flower garden. She was devoted to her extended family, spending hours reading, singing and playing with the young ones, and sharing whatever she had with anyone in need. Maryś unconditional love, generous heart and quick wit enriched the lives of her entire family.
In accord with Maryś wishes, there will be no viewing or calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 13, at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 318 Plane Street, Weatherly, officiated by Monsignor William Baker. Internment in St. Nicholas Catholic Cemetery will follow the Mass.
