John R. Meier, Sr.
January 9, 1923 — October 23, 2010
John R. Meier, Sr., 87 years of age of Weatherly, passed away at the home of his son, John, Jr., on Saturday October 23, 2010, in Sugarloaf.
Born in Hazleton, on January 9, 1923, he was the son of the late Joseph F. and Grace (Gallagher) Meier.
John was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes R.C.C. of Weatherly, where he served as a Eucharistic Minister and was a 4th Degree Knight in the Parish Knights of Columbus.
John was a proud Navy veteran having served during World War II in the Pacific Theater, and attained the rating of Machinist Mate 1st class.
Prior to retiring he was employed as a tool and die maker at Tung Sol, and was a past president of the IBEW union there.
John was an avid hunter, member and past president of the Silver Ridge Hunting Club,and member of the Sugarloaf Woodsmen Club. He enjoyed working in his shop, garden and was a loyal Penn State fan.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years Teresa (Marusak) in 2008, by his brother Msgr. Joseph Meier; sisters, Mrs., Marjorie Gallagher, Miss Grace Meier, and Miss Agatha Meier.
Surviving are sons, John R. Meier, Jr., and his wife Rosemary of Sugarloaf, and Joseph A. Meier, and his wife Sherry of Homestead, Fl..; brother, B. Eugene Meier of Smyrna, Tenn; grandchildren, John F. Meier, Gretchen Pledger, Brian Meier, Jaime Diaz, Shannon Owens, and the joy of his life seven great grandchildren, Angela, Ciara, Racheal, Kyle, Alaina,Katie, and Timothy.
Friends will be received from the Philip J. Jeffries Funeral Home 211 First Street Weatherly, Pa. 18255 on Tue October 26, 2010 from 6 to 8:00 PM, and on Wed. October 27, 2010 from 10:30 to 11:30 AM.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Noon on October 27, 2010 from Our Lady of Lourdes R.C.C. 318 Plane St. Weatherly, Pa., Rev. Floyd Caesar officiating.
Interment with Military honors in the parish cemetery
