Mr. John T. Burkey, Sr., age 91, formerly of Tamaqua, died Friday, April 1, 2011, at Life Quest Nursing Ctr. in Quakertown, Pa.
A St. Jerome High School graduate, John was a Sgt. in the United States Army during WWII. Returning home, he worked as a coal miner, and then for Reigel Paper Mills of Milford, NJ.
John was an avid deer hunter,
Born in Tamaqua, he was the son of the late Samuel and Annie (Siegenfuse) Burkey.
He is survived by his
Two Sons,
John Burkey and his wife Margaret,
Thomas J. Burkey and his wife Linda both of Coopersburg;
One Sister,
Hilda Ingram of Florida;
Ten grandchildren
Eighteen great-grandchildren;
Preceded in death by his wife Zelda May (Sassaman) Burkey in 2002; son, Patrick Breslin; daughter, Eleanor (Breslin) Frabel; brothers, Joseph, and Sam; sisters, Charlotte, Minnie, Helen, Cora, Edith, Ada, and Octivia.
Arrangements are being handled by E. Franklin Griffiths Funeral Home, Inc., 655 East Broad Street Tamaqua, Pa., where the family will receive friends from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM Wednesday, April 6, 2011.
Funeral service will be at E. Franklin Griffiths Funeral Home, Inc. at 11:00 AM Wednesday, April 6, 2011, Rev. David W. Grant officiating.
Interment with Military Honors, will be at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery, Tamaqua.
