Mr. Herman F. Lutz, age 80, of Tamaqua, Pa., died Thursday, May 19, 2011, at St. Lukes Miners Memorial Medical Ctr. in Coaldale.
A 1948 Tamaqua High School graduate, Herman was a member of St. Jerome R.C.C. of Tamaqua.
He and his late wife Inez, owned and operated Lutz News Agency in downtown Tamaqua from 1980 until 2005.
Civically, Herman served as a member of the Tamaqua Borough Council for many years, having presided over council as President, while a member of the Fire Committee.
He was on the Board of Directors of the Tamaqua Salvation Army, and was Past President of the Tamaqua Chamber of Commerce.
A life member of the South Ward Fire Company, Herman held the titles of Chief, and Past President. He had served as Treasurer of the Tamaqua Fireman's Relief Assoc., and Treasurer of the Schuylkill County Fireman's Assoc..
In appreciatioon of his devotion to Tamaqua, Herman was named Citizen of the Year in 1999.
He was an avid Notre Dame fan.
Born in Tamaqua, he was the son of the late Matthew and Ida Mae (Burton) Lutz.
He is survived by his

Nancy (Lutz) Willing wife of John A. , Jr., both of Tamaqua;
Three Sisters,
Dolly (Lutz) Yost of Indiana,
Helen (Lutz) Bartel of Temple, Pa.,
Florence "Toots" (Lutz) Labyack of Tamaqua;
Three grandchildren, Danielle, Nicholas, and Jacqueline;
Three great-grandchildren,Courtney, Robert, and Laura;
Three great great-grandchildren, Alexis, Makena, and Jacob;
Preceded in death by his wife Inez M.(Rollis) Lutz on May 19, 2008; son, Edward H. Lutz in 1994; brother, Matthew L. Lutz; sisters, Mrs. Jean Starr, and Miss Mary Lutz.
Arrangements are being handled by E. Franklin Griffiths Funeral Home, Inc., 655 East Broad Street Tamaqua, Pa., where the family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Monday, May 23, 2011 and from 9:30 AM to 10:15 AM Tuesday, May 24, 2011.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Jerome R.C.C. at 11:00 AM Tuesday, May 24, 2011. Rev. James Bechtel to officiate.
Interment will be at St. Jerome R.C.C. Cemetery in Tamaqua, Pa.
