Mr. Harry H. "Red" Sassaman, age 83, of Tamaqua died Thursday, April 23, 2009 at his home on Biddle Street.
He was a 1943 Tamaqua High School graduate and served our country with the U.S. Navy during WWII, serving as a seaman First Class on board the aircraft carrier Bon Homme Richard.
Harry retired from the former Atlas Powder Company in 1986 as a Lab Technician. He was co-owner of Bowl-O-Drome from the 1950's to 1971 and a member of the Tamaqua Legion.
And avid sportsman, he pitched for a semi-pro softball league, was a member of a semi-pro bowling team, and was a lifelong golfer. He was a ardent fan of all Tamaqua High School athletics.
Born in Tamaqua, Harry Sassaman was the son of the late Andrew and Lillie (Kishbauch) Sassaman.
He is survived by sons; Larry and his wife, Kathy of Mechanicsburg, Pa., Stephen and his wife, Althea of Harrisburg, Pa., and daughters; Linda wife of Robert Pavlick of Lansdale, Pa., and Harriet, wife of Franklin Gustus of Lansford, Pa., and sister; Charlotte Hall of Cortland, N.Y.
He is also survived by six grandchildren; Stacey, Stephanie, Kristin, Elizabeth, Andrew, and Avary, and four nieces.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Corinne H. (Brode) Sassaman in 1994; infant son, Byron Sassaman (1949); brother, John Sassaman (1918); and sister, Laura Elizabeth Berk (2005).
Arrangements are being handled by E. Franklin Griffiths Funeral Home, Inc. 655 E. Broad St., Tamaqua, Pa. where the family will receive friends on Wednesday, April 29, 2009 from 10-11 a.m.
Memorial service on Wednesday, April 29, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at the E. Franklin Griffiths Funeral Home.
Interment will be at Odd Fellows Cemetery, Tamaqua, Pa.
