Mr. Glenn R. "Ray" Gehr, age 89, of Golden Oaks Village, White Haven, Pa., died Saturday, February 25, 2012, at Wilkes-Barre Veteran's Medical Center, Wilkes-Barre.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Constance E. "Connie" (Broome) Gehr.
Ray was born in New Alexandria, PA on June 10, 1922. He was one of five sons of the late Harry and Nora (Kepple) Gehr and spent his growing up years on their farm. He was a graduate of Greensburg High School in Westmoreland County and then attended Penn State before entering the U.S.Navy. He served in the Navy during World War II until 1946. Upon discharge he
attended the Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics amd graduated as a Master Mechanic. He was employed as an aircraft hydraulic mechanic and service engineer for the former Trans World Airlines for 40 years. In 2003 Ray was awarded the prestigious Charles Taylor Master Mechanic Award by the Department of Transportation, F.A.A. which is on a plaque in the Smithsonian Institute's Aviation Museum in Washington, D.C.
Ray was a faithful member of the Community Bible Church of Pocono Lake, PA and dearly loved his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He was a long time member of The Gideons Int'l. and found much joy in distributing Bibles to individuals and organizations on behalf of the Gideons. He was an avid outdoorsman with a love of fishing, hunting and camping and he made many trips to Canada, Northern Michigan and Alaska over the years. Ray was well loved for his big smile, happy disposition, his very firm handshake and his wonderful story telling.
He was preceded in death by brothers John, Kenneth and Thomas Gehr.
He is survived, in addition to his wife Constance, by his beloved son Bradley Gehr and wife Eva, and beloved daughter Kendra (Gehr) Metzger, wife of Dr. James Metzger of No. Branford, CT. He is also survived by his much loved grandchildren, Hanna and Jonathan Gehr, and Kyle, Dayna and Kayla Metzger.
Visitation Friday, 5:00-7:00 p.m. and the Funeral Service on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. with visitation one hour prior to the Service at the Philip J. Jeffries Funeral Home, 211 First St., Weatherly, PA with Military Honors to follow. Internment will be private at Ft. Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, PA.
