Dr. George F. Scheers., an area physician who delivered over 10,000 babies during his 41-year career as an obstetrician and gynecologist, passed away Monday October 7, 2013 at his home. He was 83 years old.
Born on December 25th, 1929, in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Frank and Ruth (Wood) Scheers.
Dr. Scheers was a 1948 graduate of MMI Preparatory School, Freeland. He earned his undergraduate degree from Wilkes University in 1952. He went on to study medicine at the New York Medical College where he earned his M.D. in 1956.
To help pay for his studies, he worked as a chemist at Rohm and Haas in Philadelphia and aided in the development of several consumer and medical products.
Dr. Scheers completed an internship at Mercy Hospital, Wilkes-Barre, and served two years as a Captain in the U.S. Army stationed in Munich, Germany. He completed his residency at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia. He was a Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and was a 56 year member of the Pennsylvania Medical Society. Dr. Scheers established his practice in Hazleton where he specialized in Obstetrics and Gynecology at St. Joseph's, and Hazleton General Hospital from 1963 until his retirement in 1998.
Dr. Scheers’ areas of expertise extended beyond the hospital setting. He was an avid outdoorsman, woodworker, and gardener. He aided his late brother-in-law, Frank Moran, in the construction of his home in Weatherly.
He is survived by five children and their spouses , Cherie (Scheers) Gudz and her husband Anthony, Weatherly; Tracey (Scheers) Ross and her husband, Anthony, Hazleton; Lt. Col. George Scheers USAF and his wife Jennifer, Tampa, FL ; William Scheers and his wife Marjorie, Drums; and Thomas Scheers and his wife Monica, Redondo Beach, CA. He was preceded in death by his son, Robert Scheers.
Dr. Scheers has one beloved Sister, Ruth (Scheers) Moran of Hazleton wife of the late Frank Moran.
Dr. Scheers was blessed with nine grandchildren, Michael D. Casari, Jr., Dr. Nicole (Ross) Gurski, Steven, Anne & John Scheers, Victoria & Caroline Scheers, Mary Catherine Rogers, and Bradley Evans.
Many nieces and nephews also survive him.

Dr. Scheers wanted to offer a sincere Thank You to the many families who permitted him to share in their life.
