Eugene S. O'Neill

Eugene S. (Nookie) O’Neill passed away at his home in Philadelphia. Born in Weatherly, May 7, 1934 the son of the late Eugene H., and Annette (Stone) O’Neill.

A Weatherly High School graduate, he entered Penn State University where he was a member of the Blue Band, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. He earned his Master’s Degree in Social Work at the University of Pennsylvania. Eugene served in the United State Army and was assigned to the medical corps.

Eugene, became director of Youth Services in Marian Township and ran a telephone hot line in Philadelphia. He was a member of a committee that raised millions of dollars for under privileged children, and worked with intercommunity action, Inc. Eugene became Social Work Supervisor in a cooperative venture of the Philadelphia School District, the University of Pennsylvania School Of Social Work, and the West Philadelphia Corporations. He received recognition for his many years of service by the Camden Police Academy. In his late years he set up his own private practice.

Oil painting, camping, music, playing the piano and bass fiddle were just a few of his interests.

Proceeded in death by his wife, Anna, and son Richard, Eugene is survived by a sister, Jayne Hittinger wife of Wayne of Weatherly, Pennsylvania; niece, Christine, and her husband Frank Peiser; nephew, Wayne Hittinger and his wife Gabriela.
