Elizabeth T. (Betty) Murphy, 81 years old, of Fort Smith, AR and formerly of Coaldale passed gently into the arms of Jesus on February 1, 2012 in Fort Smith AR.
Betty was the daughter of the late John and Helen (Moyer) of Tamaqua. She attended St. Jerome schools and church, which was the setting of her marriage to the late Thomas J, Murphy Sr. of Coaldale to whom she was married for 50 years.
She was a member of the former St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Coaldale and is currently a member of both St. Jerome Catholic Church in Tamaqua and St. Boniface Catholic Church in Fort Smith, where she regularly attended Mass.
Betty was a talented seamstress and baker who enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Devoted to her Catholic faith, she rarely missed a day without praying her rosary. During her time in Coaldale she was active in the CHOSE Organization, a past president of the American Legion Auxiliary and a Girl Scout leader. She was last employed by the Panther Valley School District.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, John (Jack) Carroll of Pottsville and Eugene Carroll of Tamaqua and two sisters, Anna Dever of Nesquehoning and Helen Larkin of Tamaqua.
She is survived by:
Two sons and daughters-in-law, Harry J and Charlotte K Murphy of Coaldale and Thomas J and Audrey Murphy of Hazleton and one daughter and son-in-law Patricia and Dave Valentini of Fort Smith, AR with whom she resided for the past 10 years.

Erin and Ryan Goss of Lavaca AR, David Valentini, Jr. of Fort Smith AR, Tami and Bruce Freyman of Coaldale, Harry Murphy Jr. of Coaldale, Manuel and Carla Najarro of Tamaqua, Jennifer Murphy of Lansford, Melissa and Randy Nielson of Virginia, Thomas and Kristen Johnson, Amy L Johnson, Bobbie Sue Johnson and fiancé Geraldo Negrette, and Brian P Johnson all of Hazleton.
Great Grandchildren:
Garrett and Reed Goss, Kasey Ansbach, Tessie and Charlie Englert, Maximus and Corabel Najarro, Devon, Donavan, John and Taylor Lynn Johnson, Ariana Negrette, Bryan P Johnson, Jr., and a special granddaughter on her way on February 28, 2012
Two brothers and sisters-in-law Joseph and Catherine Carroll and Ronald and Donna Carroll all of Tamaqua. And one brother-in- law, Norman Foran of Mechanicsburg, PA
As well as many beloved nieces and nephews, and special friends Pasquale and Marie Valentini of Lansford and Ross, Deborah Jill and Jack Flanary of Fort Smith, AR.
Visitation will be Monday February 6 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at E. Franklin Griffiths Funeral Home 655 East Broad Street, Tamaqua.
Requiem Mass will be celebrated at St. Jerome’s Catholic Church Tuesday February 7 at 11:00 AM, Rev. John Frink to officiate.
Interment at Sky-View Memorial Park, Tamaqua.
