Edwin "PeeWee" L Mantz, age 88, of W. Phillip St., Coaldale, passed away Tuesday, April 28, 2015, at home surrounded by his family.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian E. (Bender) Mantz on 8/28/2006.
Edwin was a Silver Star recipient having served in the Army in the Battle of the Bulge during WWII. "Edwin L. Mantz, Private Co. F, 345th Infantry Regiment, for gallantry in action against an armed enemy of the United States near Auw, Germany, on 6 February, 1945. While acting as a scout for his platoon, Private Mantz was challenged by an enemy sentry. But his fluent knowledge of the German language gave him the opportunity to advance and overpower the enemy soldier."
In his long, cold tour of duty, Mantz earned, in addition to the Silver Star, two Bronze Stars, a combat infantry badge, a Presidential Citation, a Good Conduct Medal, three battle stars, a commendation letter from then-President Harry Truman and a certificate from the PA House of Representatives in honor of his military service.
He previously worked for J. Robert Bazley, Port Carbon and Barletta Materials & Construction, Hazleton doing highway construction.
Catholic by faith, he was a member of the former St. John the Baptist R.C.C of Coaldale.
He was a life long member of the Coaldale Rod & Gun Club having served as past president and he enjoyed tinkering with woodworking and his vegetable garden and he was a mushroom picker.
Born in New Ringgold on April 30, 1926, he was the son of the late Charles Mantz and the late Edna (Herring) Mantz.

Don Mantz and his wife Mary of Coaldale;
One Sister,
Betty Fritz of Temple, Pa.;
Two Brothers,
William Mantz and his wife Doris of Lansdale and
Elwood Mantz of New Ringgold;
Three Grandchildren,
Vicky Unitis and Aaron and Christa Mantz.
Preceded in death by his sister, Pauline (Mantz) Cunfer; brother, Norman Mantz.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the E. Franklin Griffiths Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 655 East Broad Street Tamaqua, Pa. where the family will receive friends from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM, Friday, May 1, 2015.
Memorial Service will be at E. Franklin Griffiths Funeral Home & Cremation Services at 11:00 AM, Friday, May 1, 2015, Pastor Francis J. Baransky to officiate.
Interment with Military Honors will be at Sky View Memorial Park, Tamaqua.
