Donald E. Kester

Donald E. Kester, 93 of Tamaqua, passed away on Wednesday, August 26 at the St. Luke’s Miners Memorial Hospital, Coaldale. He was the husband of Miriam (Weston) Kester, whom he was married to for 64 years.
Born in Ringtown, July 11, 1922, he was the son of late Edward A. and Elva Mae (Lindenmuth) Kester. He retired as a brakeman for the Reading Railroad and as a conductor for Conrail in Allentown.
During WWII he was a sergeant 1st class in the Air Force, serving in the Pacific theater, stationed in Saipan.
Don was a graduate of Ringtown High School and a life-time member of St. John UCC in Tamaqua. The Tamaqua Elks #592 for 67 yrs. He was “Elk of the Year” in 2007. The American Legion Post 173, Tamaqua (66 yrs.) and a member of Tamaqua Lodge #238 F&AM. He was also a founding member of the Tuscarora R/C Flying Club.
Surviving is a son, Vaal and his wife Janet of West Penn Twp. Two daughters, Aimee, wife of Michael Caputo of Weatherly, and Terri, wife of Edward Kane of Tamaqua. Five grandchildren, Chris Schaefer and his wife Jessica and Eric Schaefer and his wife, Jessica. Meredith Kester, and Ashley and Amanda Kane, and one great-grandchild, Madeline Rose Schaefer. Two sisters, Phyllis Whitehead and Barbara Mundy and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, William and Theodore and four sisters, Marion Woodward, Norma Kester, Sandra Phillips, and Patricia Stellfox.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday August 29, 2015 at 11:00 AM from The E. Franklin Griffiths Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Inc., 655 East Broad Street, Tamaqua. Friend may call from 9:00 - 11:00 AM at the funeral home. The Rev. Kevin Duffy-Guy will be officiating.
Interment will be at Sky View Memorial Park, Tamaqua.
