Cpl. John Carl Hafer

Cpl. John Carl Hafer, age 67, of Tamaqua, PA, died Tuesday, April 3, 2012, upon arrival at St. Luke's Miners Memorial Medical Center of Coaldale.

Married to his wife of 47 years, Joann E. (Potosky) Hafer.

Carl was a 1962 Tamaqua High School graduate, and standout three-sport athlete, participating in football, basketball, and baseball. Carl, matriculated to Williamson Trade School where he continued his athletic prowess. In May, Williamson Trade School will induct Carl into their Sports Hall of Fame as a three-sport athlete in football, baseball, and cross-country.

Carl's entire career was in law enforcement. He first worked for the District of Columbia and then the Pennsylvania State Police where he retired as a Corporal in the Hazleton Barracks. Carl maintained membership in the Retired PA State Police Association.

Carl loved horses, and particiapated in the State Police Rodeo and was a member of the American Quarter-Horse Association.

A baseball umpire, Carl umpired Little League, where he worked sectionals through state games, to high school and
college baseball.

A member of SS. Peter & Paul R.C.C. of Tamaqua, Carl was a member of the Knights of Columbus Henry Baker Lodge of Tamaqua.

As a young adult, he was involved in scouting and earned scoutings highest honor, Eagle Scout.

Born in Tamaqua, he is the son of John Carl Hafer, Sr. and his wife, Jean (Fisher), of Tamaqua.

He is also survived by his

Two Sons:
Joseph C. Hafer and his wife, Helen, of Longmont, Colorado;
Lance E. Hafer and his companion, Johanna Calvello, of Wilmington, Delaware;

One Sister:
Ester J. (Hafer), wife of, Stanley Borascius of Schnecksville, PA;

Two Brothers:
Joseph "Ted" Hafer and his wife, Bernadette, of Tamaqua;
Gregory S. Hafer and his wife, Elaine, of Pottsville;

Two grandchildren: Alexandra and Scot;

Nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by his son, John Carl Hafer, III.

Private Arrangements are being handled by E. Franklin Griffiths Funeral Home, Inc., 655 East Broad Street Tamaqua, Pa..

Interment will be at SS. Peter & Paul R.C.C.
