CHARLES R. “BRUM” DONOHUE
Charles R. “Brum” Donohue, 86, of Tamaqua, PA passed away on Sunday February 7, 2016 at home, surrounded by his family. He was the husband of Beryl M. (Wagner) Donohue. They would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on March 24, 2016.
Brum was the co-founder and proud owner of P& B Sporting Goods Inc., in Tamaqua for nearly 40 years. He and the late J. Packer Lebo were pioneers and legends in the local sporting goods marketplace, having started the business in 1947. The P&B provided sponsorship to numerous sporting efforts in the area and the business was extremely instrumental in launching the Tamaqua Knee High Football Program. The P&B was known far and wide and continues to be recognized and recalled by generations of sportsmen.
Born in Tamaqua on August 20, 1929, he was a son of the late Hugh B. and Berdella (Wetterau) Donohue.
A graduate of the Tamaqua High School Class of 1947, Brum was a veteran of the Korean War, having served in the Army. He was stationed for 15 months in Captieux, France, where he was responsible for all headquarters operations.
Brum was a respected member of Trinity United Church of Christ, where he served for many years on the Finance Committee. He also was a board member of the Mauch Chunk Trust Company Shepp Fund for many years. A life member of both the American Hose Fire Company in Tamaqua and the Tamaqua American Legion, Brum also held affiliations with and was lauded by numerous domestic and international sporting organizations.
A real gentleman, who loved his family and led an exemplary life, Brum was involved in many philanthropic efforts.
He was preceded in death by a son, Ricky H. Donohue.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, is a daughter, Candece B., wife of Joel K. Johns of New Fairfield, CT; a grandson, Joshua R. Donohue and his wife, Sarah, of Hoboken, NJ; a daughter-in-law, Mary Ellen Donohue of Lake Hauto; a brother-in-law, Paul W. Wagner of Tamaqua, a sister-in-law, Mary I. Hall of Haines City, FL, and several nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Catharine Conageski.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the E. Franklin Griffiths Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc. of 655 East Broad Street Tamaqua, Pennsylvania 18252. (570) 668-2550.
Funeral Services will be conducted on Friday February 12, 2016 at 11 o’clock A.M. from the funeral home with the Rev. David W. Grant and the Rev Darryl Kensinger, co-officiating.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday evening from the funeral home from 6:00 to 8:00 P.m., and on Friday morning February 12, 2016 from 10:00 A.M. until time of services.
Interment with military honors will follow the service at the Odd Fellows Cemetery, Tamaqua.
