Bertha “Lois” Hueholt of White Haven died on May 2, 2015. Lois was born on August 12, 1929 in Newville, Pa. to Bertha F. Morrison Webber and Alfred F. Webber.
Lois was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Rev. Glen R. Hueholt of White Haven; son, Richard G. (Jolene) Hueholt of Berwick; daughters Carol S. (Craig) Young of Westerville, Ohio and Barbara A. (Dayton) Holmes of Londonderry Twp. Dauphin County; grandchildren Michael (Kim) Spangler; Kenneth and Nick Hueholt; granddaughter Bethany (Jamie) Leavens; and great-grandchildren Michaela Spangler, Natasha and Mitchell Leavens and a wonderful cat Biddy. She is also survived by sisters Elizabeth Gratz of Florence, Arizona and Dorothy Reese of Newburg, Pa. as well as brothers Frederick Webber of Vienna, VA, Harold (Florence) Webber of Mechanicsburg, PA, and Richard (Norma) Webber of Newville, PA. She was preceded death in by son James A. Hueholt and his companion Norman Bowles and brothers Samuel, Donald, Robert, and Marlin Webber.
Lois valued learning and education. She graduated from Newville High School, obtained a Bachelor’s degree at Findlay University and was a Martha Holden Jennings Teacher Scholar at Ohio University. She obtained her Master’s degree in History at Bloomsburg University.
Lois was a journalist, educator, and mental health/developmental disabilities professional. She worked as a reporter and editor for the Findlay Courier and Gallipolis Daily Tribune. She taught high school history and foreign languages in schools in Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania. She was the first Director of the Gallia County, Ohio Foster Grandparent Program and served the Gallia County MH/MR Board. She was a case worker for 3 County MH/MR Services of Danville, Pennsylvania and later worked as a Program Supervisor at White Haven Center.
An active pastor’s wife, Lois contributed to ministries at Reedurban United Presbyterian Church, Gallipolis United Presbyterian Church, Bloomsburg Presbyterian Church, and Freeland Presbyterian Church. She was a member and Elder of Weatherly Presbyterian Church and served on the nominating committee for the Synod of the Trinity. Lois was co-founder of Castaway Critters, the James A. Hueholt Memorial Foundation for Animals, an agency that has rescued over 11,000 animals since its founding in 2001. She was an avid reader, traveler, advocate for persons with disabilities, and animal lover. Lois had a phenomenal memory for dates and people as well as history and literature. Her greatest devotion though was to her family.
A memorial celebration of Lois’ life will be held at the Freeland Presbyterian Church, 625 Front Street, Freeland, Pa. on Tuesday, May 5 at 11:00 A.M. Burial will be private and at the convenience of family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Castaway Critters, P.O. Box 1421, Harrisburg, Pa. 17105; First Presbyterian Church of Weatherly, E Main & Spring Streets, Weatherly, PA 18255, and Freeland Presbyterian Church, 625 Front Street, Freeland, Pa. 18224.
