Bernice J. Steigerwalt, 76, of Lehighton, Pennsylvania, passed away on Friday, May 5, 2023, at Lehigh Valley Hospital Salisbury Twp. after a courageous 23-year battle against cancer.
Born on Thursday, May 23, 1946, in Amesbury, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Ida (Cloutir) Mailloux. Bernice was predeceased by her precious granddaughter, Brooke Steigerwalt.
Surviving her is her devoted husband of 50 years, Ronald R. Steigerwalt. She is also survived by her son, Jeffrey Steigerwalt and his wife Stephanie of Lehighton, one granddaughter Alison Steigerwalt, and her stepson Reed Steigerwalt and his wife Jennifer of Gilbert, AZ. Additionally, she leaves behind her sister, Mona Murphy of Clearwater, FL.
Bernice graduated from Amesbury High School and went on to earn a degree from Trinity College in Burlington, VT. Later in life, at the age of 50, she decided to continue her education and enrolled in the Masters of English program at Kutztown University, graduating in 1998 at the age of 52.
Early in her career, Bernice taught high school in Connecticut. After two years of teaching, she decided to enter the corporate world and joined Hartford Insurance Co. in Hartford, CT. After moving to Philadelphia and meeting her husband, she spent most of her professional life in Real Estate. Later on, she found fulfillment teaching English at LCCC and Northampton Community College, as well as establishing her own business specializing in grant writing services.
Bernice was an avid reader and a book club member. She was a member of Ben Salem UCC church where she served on many committees, known for her devotion to the future of the Church and its growth. She shared many happy moments with Ron, enjoying their travels, playing golf, and spending quality time together.

A Celebration of Bernice’s Life will be held on June 17, 2023 at 11 o’clock A.M. from Ben Salem UCC church, 1965 Church Hill Road, Lehighton, Pa.
