Alvin Michael Artim

February 9, 1926 — August 19, 2014

Alvin Michael Artim, 88, of Weatherly PA, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on the morning of August 19, 2014.

Alvin is survived by his loving wife Dolores (Searfoss) of 53 years and his devoted family; daughters Mary Lou Artim of Weatherly, PA, Lori Artim Mann (Charles) of Hillsborough, NC; and sons Matthew Artim (Shelley) of Pittsburgh, PA, Alan Artim (Kristin) of Playa del Rey, CA, Stephen Artim (Tammy) of Woodside, CA, and Michael Artim (Tracie) of Westfield, NC; and his grandchildren whom he cherished, Justin Artim, Shane Artim, Charlotte Mann, Tricia Artim, and Merritt Artim.

Alvin was preceded in death by his parents Michael and Anna Artim, and his sisters Verne Miles and Mary Hahn.

Known by his family and friends as Al, Dad, and Papa, he lived a very full life. He grew up in McAdoo, PA and graduated from McAdoo High School in 1943. He left the seminary at St. Procopius in Chicago to serve his country in the United States Army in World War II from 1944 to 1946, spending a very memorable Christmas 1944 in the Ardennes in the service of Patton’s Army. He returned home to attend Pennsylvania State University, Hazleton, PA, but yet again decided that he needed further life adventures. Al went on to work as a merchant marine for thirteen years and did several voyages around the world on tankers for Sun Oil Company. After meeting and marrying the love of his life, Dolores, he quit the seafaring life and went to work for the Dorr-Oliver Company and eventually moved into the field of industrial water treatment. He started his own business, Alco Water Treatment Services, in the late 70’s and eventually retired in 1995.

Alvin will be remembered as a devoted family man. The pride he had for his children and grandchildren was undeniable. He and Dolores thoroughly enjoyed their travels visiting children on both coasts of the US frequently. They also adventured together to Hawaii, Jamaica, and Italy where they attended a Papal Mass at the Vatican. Alvin travelled as well to Budapest, Hungary, and Normandy and Paris, France. Alvin will be remembered dearly for his love of adventure and the ocean, his beautiful singing voice, sharp wit, sweet smile, and loving heart.

Alvin and Dolores are members of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church of Hazleton, PA.
